U9’s v Chosen Hill

U9’s v Chosen Hill

Tewkesbury under 9”s hosted a large looking Chosen Hill side and fielded a very experienced side themselves, even though they had lost several key players through injury, illness and international call ups.

Tewkesbury 30 – 0 Chosen Hill
Chosen hill won the toss and chose to start. As expected they sent in there big players first only to be met by an impressive Tewkesbury defence who repelled them back with out standing aggression, this shocked the Chosen Hill players who did not expect to be met by such ferociousness. Tewkesbury then took the game to Chosen Hill and started to run at the opposition with the same aggression as they had when defending driving them back down the field. This kept on through out the half, Tewkesbury ran in two tries and had another two disallowed for knock ons.
The second half saw a broken Chosen Hill side take to the field and Tewkesbury making several changes to their team, this how ever never changed there tactics or aggressive play as time after time they drove Chosen Hill back every time they had the ball. Chosen Hill now started to miss tackles to allow Tewkesbury to run in four more tries before the end of the game.
Tewkesbury 45 – 5 Chosen hill
Tewkesbury started the second game with a completely different side, this allowed Chosen Hill to settle into there game as Tewkesbury had to reshuffle there formation. Chosen Hill struck first with a well worked try. this spurned them on and gave them a bit of a spring there step, this how ever did not last as this was the motivational tool the Tewkesbury team needed and they quickly replied with a try of there own, as the game went on Tewkesbury started to take more control of the game and ran in one more try before half time.
The second half saw both sides make changes to there line ups, Chosen Hill how ever started to fade and as time went on and under extreme pressure from Tewkesbury, folded allowing them to run in try after try to make the final score a deserved 45-5.
All the players available stepped to the challenge and played very well, this is the reason no one player has been mentioned in the write up as they all played out of there skins.

On a very cold, but dry 24th February 2013, the Under 9’s took part in the GRFU County Cup at Chosen Hill FP RFC.

Clifton 10 – 0 Tewkesbury
Tewkesbury 2013 campaign got off to a very slow start as the players heads seemed to still be in the clouds. captain Charlie Kendrick won the toss and decided this time to kick off. Joe Goodridge took the ball from kick off and drove into the Clifton players with a little support from his sleepy team mates only to have the ball ripped off him and the Clifton player charge down the blind side and score an unopposed try. I would like to say that this woke Tewkesbury up, but I cant, they did how ever tackle very well and drove the Clifton players back for the rest of the half but failed to compete for the ball once they had. The high light of the half was seeing the smallest Tewkesbury player on the field Ellis Todd smash and I mean smash, Clifton biggest player, which resulted in him going off and rest. The second half was no better than the first half , even with Tewkesbury putting on replacements and trying to spark the team into some sort of life, Clifton did manage to score one more try before the end of the game and to be fair played very well , but it must be said Tewkesbury on their day or even awake would have given them a better game and won.

Painswick 0 – 15 Tewkesbury
This was a must win game and after some home truths and a bit of a foot up there back sides Tewkesbury woke up and played like they actually wanted to be there. from the off Tewkesbury went at the Painswick team with there usually ferocity, they attacked and challenged for every ball on the floor and drove Painswick back when ever they won the ball, it took some time to grind Painswick down as they too put every effort into their game but eventually had to succumb to Tewkesbury’s relentless pressure, Tyler Martin picked the ball up from the base of a ruck and drove over the line for the first score of the game and the end of the first half .
the second half started just has the first half had finished with Tewkesbury attacking from the off. All the players had now woken up and where starting to enjoy it and make some big hits on there opposition and some decisive runs up the field , this resulted in Painswick conceding a penalty on the half way line for holding onto the ball on the floor whilst under extreme pressure from the ever present Sam Williams, Harry Ashmede, Joe Goodridge and Charlie Kendrick. Quick thinking Charlie Kendrick took a quick tap penalty and shot off down the field catching Painswick flat footed to score Tewkesbury’s second try and thus giving them some breathing space. Tewkesbury could now relax a little and start to play some nice rugby. Miles Rendell came on and made ground when ever he got the ball Jack Cordell co-ordinated the line outs and scrums, Painswick how ever made a final attempt to get back into the game and came at Tewkesbury with all they could only to have the ball ripped off them by Saun Collins who then shipped the ball to Brandon Llewellyn, who then showed some blistering pace to go around the opposition and jog into round off the game and make it 15-0 to Tewkesbury.

Ross-on-Wye 0 – 25 Tewkesbury
This was now a make or break game if we lost we would be going home and Tewkesbury was in no mood to do that. They played as though there lives depended on it. Ross conceded an early penalty and the now full of beans and cocky Charlie Kendrick took full advantage of the ref to tap and go to score his second try of the tournament and kick start Tewkesbury’s charge forward to the quarter finals. Ross still suffering from Tewkesbury’s driving play and all round attack conceded another penalty for holding on again as Tewkesbury tried to pick and drive as they drove over the top of the Ross player, once again team captain Charlie Kendrick ceased his opportunity and tapped and went again with a quick penalty catching Ross napping again to score his second of the game. Kick off saw Ross turn over the ball deep in Tewkesbury’s half and see the Tewkesbury players ship the ball out wide to there flying player Brandon Llewellyn who was now on fire as he sped past the Ross defence to score a well worked team try and give Tewkesbury a comfortable half time lead .
The second half saw Tewkesbury on top form and playing like champions big runs from Mason Rendell, Harvey Maycock helped Tewkesbury march on with Joe Goodridge now playing like a true forward and revelling in the challenge he picked up the ball from a ruck and drove through a gap dragging two or three Ross players with him only to have the vision to spot the ever present Charlie Kendrick on his shoulder and pop him the ball for him to go over for his third try of the game. Ross were now on the rack and with Tewkesbury in full flow, nothing could stop them adding to there tally and a player who had ran his heart out and put him self about popped up to round off the scoring with a nice try of his own Sam Williams.

Longlevens 5 – 5 Tewkesbury
After a lengthy cold wait (2hrs) the quarter finals had started, this how ever did not hinder a well up for it Tewkesbury side who from the off took the game to Longlevens, only a great display in defence and silly mistakes stopped Tewkesbury scoring as time after time they went at the Longlevens try line. This continued for most of the first half, but against the run of play Longlevens managed to ship the ball out wide to there quick player who shrugged off a Tewkesbury attempted tackle to run the length of the field to score a try and end the first half.
The second half saw Tewkesbury make a few changes, this did not change there shape or stop them attacking with all they had left. This time though after some good pick and drives from Tewkesbury, Longlevens failed to stop Charlie Kendrick from finding a gap and going in to the corner to equalise. Now Tewkesbury really turned on the pressure and with time running out shipped the ball out wide after driving Longlevens off the ball to Brendon Llewellyn who shot up the line only to be denied a try by a last ditched tackle. this though was deemed to be a high tackle and Tewkesbury was awarded a penalty, the crowd held there breath as Tewkesbury had one last attempt to score, Charlie Kendrick on the ball, a massive run, a side step, a dive and a stretch for the line, so close inches away,  but Longlevens scrambled across the field and just managed to keep him from scoring. Well done Longlevens and good luck in the finals as they went through on try difference .

All the players can hold there heads up high Ethan Whybrow, Mason Rendell, Miles Rendell, Jack Cordell, Tyler Martin, Brendon Llewellyn, Harvey Maycock, Harry Ashmede, Saun Collins, Joe Goodridge, Sam Williams (most tackles made), Ellis Todd (biggest tackle/hit), Charlie Kendrick (top try scorer). They all played like champions and can be proud of there achievement.

U9’s v Bream

WE CAME, WE SAW, WE CONQUERED. TEWKESBURY TRAVELLED AWAY TO PLAY BREAM WITH A LITTLE NERVOUSNESS AS THIS WAS THE TEAM THAT PUT US TO THE SWORD THE LAST TIME WE PLAYED EACH OTHER (BIG TIME) . BUT A MUCH CHANGED TEWKESBURY SIDE TOOK TO THE FIELD WITH MUCH MORE AGGRESSION AND A LOT MORE ATTITUDE TO THERE GAME. TEWKESBURY WON THE TOSS AND CAPTAIN CHARLIE KENDRICK DECIDED TO CHANGE ENDS. BREAM FROM KICK OFF FELT THE TEWKESBURY RAFF AS TEWKESBURY MADE BIG HITS ON ANY PLAYER WITH THE BALL AND COMPETED FOR ANY LOOSE BALL ON THE GROUND THIS UNSETTLED BREAM IN A BIG WAY. TEWKESBURY RAN IN TWO TRIES BEFORE HALF TIME. THE 2ND HALF SAW TEWKESBURY PILE ON THE PRESSURE AND TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF BREAM AS THEY STARTED TO CRUMBLE ( THEY WHERE LIKE SHARKS SMELLING BLOOD IN THE WATER) TEWKESBURY RAN IN 4 MORE TRIES TO MAKE THE FULL TIME SCORE 30-0 TO TEWKESBURY.

THE SECOND GAME SAW TEWKESBURY GIVE BREAM 2 OF THERE BETTER PLAYERS AS THEY LOST PLAYERS TO THE WEATHER AND THE HARSHNESS AND AGGRESSION OF TEWKESBURY’S GAME PLAY. THIS WAS AN EVEN CONTEST AS BOTH TEAMS SUFFERED TO THE CONDITIONS AND THE GAME ENDED 10-10. ALL TRIES SCORED BY TEWKESBURY PLAYERS ( BREAMS BY CHARLIE KENDRICK) , ALL PLAYERS STEPPED UP TO THE CHALLENGE AND SHOWED GREAT HARDNESS AND MATURITY , WELL DONE TO HARVEY MAYCOCK AND CHARLIE KENDRICK ON GETTING THERE FIRST TRIES OF THE SEASON.

U9’s V Longlevens

Tewkesbury Tigers under 9’s hosted Longlevens rugby club this Sunday 18th November and the first team out put in an excellent display of running rugby with some big, hard tackles thrown in. The game started a little slow though as Tewkesbury let Longlevens run in an unchallenged try from the kick off, but this only spurred Tewkesbury on and as the players grow in confidence they started to communicate with each other in defence and attack and put pressure on their opponents. The pressure paid off and after winning the ball back in the loose Tewkesbury passed the ball down the line for Brendan Llewellyn to round his opponent and outpace the covering players to score an impressive try. From the restart the Tewkesbury players upped their game even more with Charlie KendrickSam Williams and Shaun Collins all taking charge and orchestrating the lines of attack and defence. As Longlevens started to struggle to keep hold of the ball young Mason Rendell seized his chance and ran a lovely weaving line to score another try just before the end of the half .
The second half started with both teams competing well for the ball but Tewkesbury came off the stronger with Joe Goodridge and Harry Ashton making some big strong runs and Jack Cordell supporting them all the way Tewkesbury won the ball in a good position, Jack Cordell passed the ball to Sam Williams who shipped the ball down the line to Charlie Newing , he was stopped just short of the line but had the presence of mind to pop the ball to the ever present Charlie Kendrick , who then floated a miss pass to Sam Williams to run in the third try of the game for Tewkesbury. The teams then battled each other well with Longlevens edging the final minutes of the game with a nice try of their own. The game ended 15-10 to Tewkesbury, I’d like to make a special mention to Tyler Martin who had a great game in defence and attack and won many a ball on the deck and tackled like a demon. All the kids played very well and should be proud of how they played .

The second game Tewkesbury fielded a fresh team , the game started off the same as the first game with the same Longlevens player running around the Tewkesbury players and scoring a try, this unfortunately did not have the same effect as the previous game and this time Longlevens did not want to give this game up and loose a second. The Tewkesbury players challenged well in the game but unfortunately fell off to many tackles this allowed Longlevens to run in three more tries before the half was over. The second half started slowly for Tewkesbury and Longlevens took full advantage and scored two more tries, Tewkesbury did however manage to get on the score sheet when they managed to get clean ball and pass it down the line for Ellis Todd to score in the corner, all the kids played well and in fits and starts showed some good promise, players like Harvey Maycock , Jorja Taylor, Miles RendellSam Carter,  Alex Oliver, Simon Ellwood,  Aaron Nunn, Jacob Packwood and Dan Lewis. Well done to all the kids who were available to play today keep it up.

U9’s v Stow

TEWKESBURY TIGERS UNDER 9’S TRAVELLED TO STOW RUGBY CLUB TO PLAY THERE FIRST CONTACT MATCH OF THE SEASON FULL OF EXCITEMENT , CONFIDENCE AND A LITTLE NERVOUSNESS’ . THE FIRST GAME STARTED OFF A LITTLE SLOW FOR TEWKESBURY TIGERS AS THE TEAM WAS A LITTLE SHELL SHOCKED AND OVER WHELMED THIS GAVE STOW THE ADVANTAGE WHICH THEY CEASED TO OPEN THE SCORING WITH A WELL WORKED TRY , TEWKESBURY THEN WOKE UP AND STARTED TO MAKE YARDS WITH THE BALL , WHICH IN TURN OPENED UP GAPS THAT TEWKESBURY EXPLOITED TO SCORE THERE OWN TRY . FROM THE RESTART TEWKESBURY STOLE THE BALL FROM STOW IN A RUCK SITUATION TO ROUND THERE PLAYERS AND SCORE AGAIN , EACH TEAM THEN TRADED TRIES BEFORE THE BREAK . THE SECOND HALF WAS AGAIN AN EVEN CONTEST WITH BOTH SIDES DEFENDING AND ATTACKING WITH THE SAME COMMITMENT AS THE FIRST HALF , TEWKESBURY AGAIN EDGED THIS HALF 3 TRIES TO 2 , WITH THE FINAL SCORE BEING 30-20 TO TEWKESBURY .

THE SECOND GAME SAW TEWKESBURY AND STOW FIELD A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SET OF PLAYERS EACH . STOW STARTED THE SECOND GAME VERY WELL WITH EXCELLENT RUCKING AND BALL RETENTION THIS PAID OFF AFTER A WHILE WITH TEWKESBURY UNABLE TO KEEP UP THERE EXCELLENT DEFENDING AND THEY SCORED THE OPENING TRY . THIS CARRIED ON THROUGH OUT THE HALF WITH TEWKESBURY DEFENDING AND TACKLING LIKE DEMONS AND STOW ATTACKING WITH GREAT DISCIPLINE AND COMMITMENT , STOW SCORED AGAIN BEFORE THE BREAK  TO MAKE IT 2 TRIES TO 0 , THE SECOND HALF WAS THE SAME AS THE FIRST HALF WITH TEWKESBURY AND STOW TACKLING AND RUCKING VERY WELL BUT UNFORTUNATELY TEWKESBURY COULD NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THERE POSSESSION AND STOW DID , STOW RAN IN 2 MORE TRIES BEFORE THE END OF THE GAME TO MAKE IT 20-0 TO STOW . IT MUST BE SAID THAT IF IT WAS’NT FOR GREAT TACKLING FROM TEWKESBURY IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ALOT MORE . GREAT EFFORT FROM STOW AS WELL TO STOP TEWKESBURY SCORING THERE OWN TRIES .

THE THIRD GAME WAS A MIXTURE OF BOTH TEAMS , AND WITH BOTH SIDES GAINING IN CONFIDENCE THE RUGBY WAS EXCELLENT , TEWKESBURY STARTED THE STRONGEST WITH A MIXTURE OF DRIVING RUNS AND EXCELLENT PASSING MOVES . THIS DREW STOW IN CLOSE AS TEWKESBURY MOVED IT WIDE TO SCORE THE OPENING TRY . BOTH SIDES BATTLED IT OUT WITH PLAYERS BEING ROTATED AS THE GAME PROGRESSED , TEWKESBURY MANAGED 2 MORE TRIES BEFORE THE BREAK TO MAKE IT 3-0 . THE SECOND HALF SAW BOTH SIDES REPLACE MOST OF THERE PLAYERS IN THIS HARD FOUGHT CONTEST , STOW STARTED OFF THE HALFS SCORING WITH A NICE WELL WORKED MOVE , THEN THEY TOOK ADVANTAGE AGAIN TO SCORE AGAIN AS TEWKESBURY TIRED , BUT IN A LAST DITCHED EFFORT TEWKESBURY MANAGED TO WIN THE BALL AND SCORE A TRY OF THERE OWN . THIS SPIRED ON STOW WHO WENT AT TEWKESBURY WITH EVERY THING THEY HAD JUST FOR TEWKESBURY TO DIG DEEP AND DEFEND WITH ALL THERE HEARTS . THE GAME ENDED 20-10 TO TEWKESBURY .

IT MUST BE SAID THAT BOTH TEAMS PLAYED VERY WELL AND THERE TACKLING WAS GREAT AND A BIG THANX TO STOW FOR A MOST ENJOYABLE DAY .
