Transitional Club Season with County and Regional Recognition

Transitional Club Season with County and Regional Recognition

The U18 Girls team have had a successful and enjoyable season. A transitional phase for the team with a large group stepping up from U15s has seen the team develop in stature, skill and success throughout the season.

With a strong pack the development and progression have seen greatest acceleration within the back line making the transition to a more senior and physical grade of rugby with mentoring from the more senior players.

Competing locally and in South West cup competitions the team have competed strongly with close results.

This has been recognised at both County and Regional level with the team well represented in the Gloucestershire U18s squad by Thyrza Peters, Rebecca Wells, Rebecca Pope, Shannon Stroud, Jo Brame, Olivia King, Verity Tipper, Kayley Bidder. I think that’s right Thyrza Peters has also been selected for South West regional squad and England pathway. At a coaching level Amanda Bartlett the U18s head coach has been performing the Team Manager role for the County Ladies Squad.

Overall a successful season leaving a difficult coaching dilemma to select player of the season an most improved player awards for the upcoming club presentation evening.

In a fiercely contested cup encounter Tewkesbury were narrowly edged in the final minutes of a thrilling game to a 19-24 defeat by Wellington.

Starting the game strongly with a converted breakaway try Tewkesbury were dominant in the set plays and fluent with ball in hand. Reduced to 14 players through a sin bin decision late in the first half Tewkesbury were resolute in defending their try line to go into the break with a narrow lead.

The second half started brightly with both sides looking to gain the upper hand. A harsh decision early in the half reduced Tewkesbury to 14 players for the remainder of the game. However with forward dominance in the set piece continuing Tewkesbury extended their lead. Entering the final five minutes behind Wellington secured a fine breakaway try to narrow the gap. With minutes remaining of the tight contest Wellington again broke free scoring a second late try to secure the win by five points at the death.

U18s

Tewkesbury U18 Girls finished 2015 in splendid style with a resounding 39-10 home victory.

Going into the game having lost the previous 4 games of the season, the hard work of training in the past  month paid off, as Tewkesbury scored within seconds of the kickoff.

With the scrum dominant throughout the forwards provided the platform for a fast and expansive backs division to run riot with five unanswered tries in the first half against a well drilled Old Richians side.

After the break Old Richians rallied but despite two well taken tries could not match the overriding desire and skill of the confident Tewkesbury side.
