Catherine Spencer’s visit to TRFC

On February 1st Tewkesbury u15’s Girls were treated to a visit by former women’s England captain Catherine Spencer.

It was a freezing night but we had a maximum number of girls training and all enjoyed having a star joining in their training session.

The session was fast paced to keep the girls warm and the all showed off what they had learnt.

Catherine even took time to sign balls shirts and pose for photos.

Below in an email from Catherine sent to Mike Timbrell the GRFU representative

HI Mike

I just wanted to pop you an email to let you know that I paid a visit to Tewkesbury this week. Despite the freezing conditions there was a great turnout of girls training – I did not count but must have been about 25. Their numbers have rocketed since Tewkesbury and Glos Reds joined forces at U15. They have played a number of U15’s fixtures and are due to play their first U13’s game soon.

I was really impressed by the session, Roger and Mervyn have obviously done a great job and have good parental support. There is potential to start an U18’s side next season which will help to boost numbers moving in to the ladies senior team.

Kind Regards

Spence

Tewkesbury v Bromsgrove

It was a dry Sunday afternoon when Tewkesbury hosted our second home game against Bromsgrove.

Both teams are newly formed this season but this was Bromsgrove’s 1st game.

They were short of numbers so we lent them 3 of our players including a very experienced Ellen(Alan) Wells.

The game kicked off and instantly number 8, Rebecca Woodward ran through from outside the 22 for our 1st try.

The girls then put over a succession of tries with Olivia Rendell getting her first ever try.

The tries were aplenty with Rats and Jess also getting their fist tries.

Scrum half Gemma Green found her previous form and scored twice, Rachael Green and Shannon also scored.

Therza Peters got our third hat trick of the season.

Kayleigh Bartlett converted 4.

Final score 63-0

Although the score looks one sided, I assure you that the Bromsgrove girls did not take things lightly.

After a reshuffle in their pack they started pushing us and contesting well.

They were very close to scoring several times but only held at bay due to a very tight Tewkesbury defence.

The girls should feel very proud of their performance and I am sure they will continue to improve.

We look forward to visiting them in march for our return fixture.

All in all a great display of rugby by all.

Catherine Spencer

The U15 Girls team will be joined in a training session by Catherine Spencer, who captained the English womens rugby team in 2010.

The training session wil take place at The Moats, home of Tewkesbury RFC on Wednesday 1st of Feb 2012

County Festival @ Dursley 22nd January

When we arrived we found out that our pool had changed completely and we were in what seemed to be the hardest group of all.

The team rose to the challenge and never disappointed as always.

Our first game was against Lydney. Sam Thomas scored early in the first half providing us with the start we needed. A strong battle ensued between two evenly matched sides. Lydney went onto score two tries to take the win.

MOM – S.Thomas

Our second game was against St Mary’s Old Boys who proved to be very strong and injuries to key players, loss of structure and a lack of tackling saw Tewkesbury go down to a large defeat.

MOM – N. Knight

Our third game was against Bredon Star. The team picked themselves up from the previous game and provided an extremely entertaining and close game. Jack Brinn came very close to giving Tewkesbury the lead early in the first half after some strong attacking rugby but unfortunately was held up on the line. Bredon subsequently scored two tries to secure the win.

MOM  – E.Perry

Our final match was against Stroud which again provided a very good and close game with both teams rucking and counter rucking extremely well. Stroud scored two tries to win the match.

MOM – J.Brinn

We were extremely proud of the team as they never gave up and fought hard against strong opposition.

Well done boys and girl.

Thanks to all our dedicated supporters who are always there.

Looking forward to next year.
